Little Stars 04:32
LITTLE STARS All the filaments glowed so bright They lit the dark and filled the night With a thousand lights A thousand lights Little stars across the ceiling The Milky Way is over our head We pretend and carry on Like we’re out here all alone Those little stars across the ceiling Start dancing to the songs They all pop like Ziggy Stardust When they put their red shoes on All the filaments glow so bright They light the dark and fill the night With a thousand lights A thousand lights Here we are all down below Little mirrors reflecting from our souls We pretend and carry on Like we’re not meant to be someone Those little stars they look a lot like you and me Flashing lights chasing flashing beats Drinking lonely drinks in lonely seats Thinking separate thoughts on separate streets All the filaments glow so bright They light the dark and fill the night With a thousand lights A thousand lights We’re all looking for some arms To hold us through the songs Till we all pop and dance together And we all put our red shoes on We all put our red shoes on We all pop and dance together And hold each other through the songs And hold each other through this song Little stars across the ceiling The Milky Way, it’s over our head

VENICE VS. THE SEA We can’t live here anymore The water is too high The locals lost the war They can’t live here anymore Market Square is seeded With foreign souvenirs Empty heartbeats rumble like Tumbleweeds shaking down the shaky street They can’t beat here anymore There’s still old money In a few accounts and hands But they took away the homes When they bought up the land We can’t live here anymore We can’t live here anymore They couldn’t buy the ocean So they built a hundred dams But the water still grows high When it decides it’s time We can’t live here anymore We can’t live here anymore

I LOVE THE CLOUDS I love the clouds more than you you, honey I love the clouds more than you you They drift in and stagger and walk away slow But they don’t break my heart when they go You loved the chase more than me, honey You loved the chase more than me You rode in on my wake then you drifted astray You broke my heart like a pot made of clay You loved the chase more than me We loved big city lights didn’t we, honey We loved big city lights didn’t we They sparkled like jewels with no deadlines or rules We loved big city lights didn’t we I love this song more than you, honey I love this song more than you It cradles me close as we waltz between codas And it don’t leave me lonely and hopeless Now I love the night more than you, honey I love the night more than you It’s secret and dark and brooding with rage But it won’t break my heart when it gives way to the day I love the night more than you, honey I love the night more than you

WASHINGTON STATE It’s not funny When all the people you love Fall to pieces In their minds They keep trying And looking harder Between the setbacks And the weekends We could volunteer For a getaway From information Wouldn’t that be great With a bottle of wine From Washington State I know we’re not popular But someone, somewhere likes our taste It’s no fun When all the people you love Fall to pieces In their minds They keep trying And looking harder For successes For the right timing Here’s a ticket To the corner store Pick us up something We’ll want something more of Like bottle of wine From Washington State I know we’re not popular But someone, somewhere likes our taste Black haired Lou He likes the Malbec White haired Sue She likes the Cabernet Red headed Cindy Likes that Zinfandel Old mean Lindy She likes her Gin Me, I like a bottle of wine From Washington State I know it’s not popular But I like the taste It ain’t bad when it’s gone And everybody Is singing different songs It ain’t bad when it’s gone And everybody Is singing different songs

Absolute Boy 03:57
ABSOLUTE BOY There’s no joy for an absolute boy Who finds reason in all that is coy There’s no marks on his face And he has not a trace Of one single political race There’s no well for indifference’s toils A hard lesson with springs that recoil There’s no grounds for your trial The jury has been out for a while And they’re not tuning in on your dial Get your hopes just as high in the sky as you can To dissect every part of some living man It’s no random mistake How we live out each day In our own given way Take your car and drive it as far as you can To some moving but desolate land Pick your fights, pick your friends There’s no reason to blend You have of your time left here to end There’s a slower wind blowing this way It won’t change everything in a day But the end ain’t the end When you’re staring over again You just have to learn To begin And your lows they’re as low as our lows So don’t bruise us and ruffle our bows We’re not trying to find All the answers this time We're just singing these words Because they rhyme We’re not trying to find All the answers this time We're just singing these words Because they rhyme

MAYBE SHE STRANGE When she was younger Much younger than she remembers The wind took her leaves Same as the trees in late September She got older And she hid out with the trains More for her sanity Than to keep from feeling strange Maybe she’s strange Maybe she’s beautiful She could be president To a country so dutiful She hasn’t the faith She counts her mistakes Just like those trains Running wild with shakes She ran away More times than we remember But what’s a home Without a heart or a burning ember So down in the underground She’d get higher than the rain More for her sanity Than to keep from feeling strange Maybe she’s strange Maybe she’s beautiful She could be president To a country so dutiful She hasn’t the faith She counts her mistakes Just like those trains Running wild with shakes There’s a little child So needs to go back home She's down in the Underground With the train tracks all alone Hope you brought your raincoat 'Cause those raindrops they cold Climbing to the stairs Looking to the sky Thunder applauds the lightning Birds they scatter wide The Underground beneath her feet The sidewalk shakes and sighs Another train has come and gone Another raindrop dropping from the sky Maybe she’s strange Maybe she’s beautiful She could be president To a country so dutiful She hasn’t the faith She counts her mistakes Just like those trains Running wild with shakes

THE LAST LINE You’re like a message in a bottle That no one will ever read You’re my bad habit That I steal for to feed You’re the want And you’re the need You’re the moment That is endlessly passing I’m the second That’s been waiting to happen You’re the wall and I’m the clock That’s been hanging around You’re a record That won’t stop playing And no medicine Is strong enough for its needle You’re the deep groove That keeps on bleeding You’re the last line That keeps on repeating In my head You’re a souvenir In a blue jean pocket And I’m a scavenger For you heart shaped locket You’re the lock And I’m the key That’s been turning around You’re a record That won’t stop playing And no medicine Is strong enough for its needle You’re the deep groove That keeps on bleeding You’re the last line That keeps on repeating In my head In my head In my head Late at night in my bed In my head Late at night in my bed

about

THE REASON
I recorded Night Music myself at home between May 2020 - March 2021. It started out as a small project to keep me occupied for a few weeks during the covid quarantine but after a few months it grew into my sole sense of normality and purpose. Its completion brought me a bittersweet sense of finality. “Now what am I going to do?” I asked myself. Creating Night Music was a very personal voyage for me and I found it rather difficult to step off the ship. You may see this as me being overly dramatic about the making of eight songs but those songs were my entire world for the same amount of time it takes to gestate a child in the womb and as it turns out, I love all of my children as deeply as anyone can love. So this is sort of my love child to you.

THE PROCESS
Night Music is a wonderfully apt title since I am a bit of a night owl and spent many of my late night quarantine hours in the studio banging on my old Baldwin upright piano. Speaking of which, this was only supposed to be a piano and vocal recording. But I finished that rather quickly and found myself with more time on my hands than I knew what to do with so I added some simple organ parts. Finished. Still quarantine. So I threw in some electric guitar … and then strings … and then horns … and then accordion … and then bass guitar. Still quarantine. So I went back and started tweaking, refining, and building on the parts I had already recorded and in some instances, rerecording parts. Hell, I learned to play instruments, like the lap steel guitar, just so I could add them to songs. For the vocal I decided to use only my scratch takes (the original guide track) because I wanted the rawness and mistakes to remain in place. All my vocals were recorded on an old Shure SM57 microphone. It was hand held which made it noisy and you can hear the airy ‘pfft’ sounds but I felt that that gave the vocals a more endearing quality. Actually all the instruments, except for the upright piano, were recorded with the same SM57 mic (I really got into SM57s for a minute). I had to stop myself from the escalating madness of adding more instrumental layers when March 2021 rolled around. It was time to start editing the tracks which is like putting a puzzle together. Thankfully, I really enjoy puzzles.

THE END
I intended on mixing and mastering the record myself because I started it and by god I'd see the damn thing through to the end. I realized pretty quickly that I was too personally invested in each and every track to have the type of perspective needed to make a good final mix. That's when I called up Steve Connelly at Zen Recording Studio and asked if I could book some time with him to utilize his masterful mixing skills and astute ears. I'm so glad I did that, really glad. There were some ups and downs with that. Again, it was very difficult to leave my babies in the care of another for the first time. But as it always happens with Steve Connelly he knew exactly how to handle a bunch of ‘unruly kids’. So this is it, the end product of my hyper-focused solitude with all of its imperfections and oddities. I hope you will find some enjoyment somewhere in my Night Music.
